INTENDED USE
For in vitro quantitative determination of unsaturated iron-binding capacity in human serum or plasma.
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE
A normal person has about 4 g of iron, two-thirds of which is in the hemoglobin found in red blood cells, and the remaining one-third stored in the liver, spleen and bone marrow.In general, only about 30% of serum transferrin is bound to iron ions. Serum unsaturated iron binding capacity (UIBC) refers to the potential ability of serum transferrin to bind iron, which, combined with the content of serum iron, is used to diagnose the occurrence and development of iron-deficiency anemia, acute hepatitis and other diseases[1][2].Blood UIBC varies with iron metabolic disorders, increasing in iron deficiency and decreasing in chronic inflammatory disorders or malignant diseases[3].
