Test Principle
The coagulation process is triggered by incubation of plasma with the optimal amount of thromboplastin and calcium. The time to formation of a fibrin clot is then measured.

◎ The PT value is higher than the expected value in the following clinical states: congenital deficiency of factors II, V, VII, X, hypofibrinogenemia or afibrinogenmia, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), primary fibrinolysis, VitK deficiencies, liver disease, oral anticoagulants, heparin, fibrinogen degradation products (FDP) therapy, etc...
◎ The PT value is commonly lower than the expected value in the following clinical states: congenital increase of coagulation factor V, oral contraceptives, hypercoagulability, thrombotic disease, etc.
